Organic cosmetic products: A growing trend

Growing concern for health, wellness and sustainability has driven the rise of organic cosmetic products. Factors such as demand for anti- aging products, sun protection and hair loss control, along with strict regulations on ingredients and reduction of environmental impact, are transforming the industry.

A study by L'Observatoire des Cosmétiques highlights that consumers are increasingly informed about hazardous ingredients in cosmetics. 98.5% recognize the impact of parabens, followed by aluminum salts (95.7%), silicones (93.9%) and UV filters (86.1%). In addition, 76.6% demand clear labeling that identifies toxic substances.

At the legislative level, Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 establishes strict controls on cosmetic ingredients. In 2014, the European Commission banned the use of certain preservatives such as MIT because of their adverse eƯects on the skin. This regulation drives innovation in natural and sustainable ingredients.

Organic Cosmetics Market Growth

According to Transparency Market Research, the organic personal care industry reached US$8.23 billion in 2013 and is projected to exceed US$15.98 billion by 2020.

  • North America: Represented more than 35% of the market in 2013, with strong growth in Mexico.
  • Europe: Expansion is expected, driven by preference for natural ingredients and legislative support.
  • Asia-Pacific: Growth driven by consumption in emerging economies such as China and India, and demand for anti-aging and hair loss products.

Key Factors in Organic Cosmetics Development

  1. Technology
Biotechnologies make it possible to obtain natural ingredients through fermentation and extraction processes with supercritical CO2. This method leaves no residue and oƯers high purity products, such as essential oils and vegetable fats.

  2. Organic Products
Skin care leads the demand, with ingredients derived from herbs, fruits and vegetables with anti-aging properties. This is followed by hair products, focused on combating dandruƯ and hair loss.

  3. Product Certification
Greenwashing is a challenge in the sector. Certification by organizations such as Ecocert, Soil Association or BDIH guarantees the authenticity of products and avoids consumer confusion.

Future prospects

The combination of growing demand, technological advances and strict regulation is consolidating the organic cosmetics market. However, challenges such as product shelf life and proper certification remain key areas for innovation and transparency in the sector.
